ESWC2011 Summer School

A few weeks ago the Planet Data summer school took place in sunny Heraklion, Crete, bringing together PhD students from across Europe who share research topics in the field of semantic technology and large scale data.

The program was an exciting mix of technical presentations and social activities. Highlights were keynote presentations by Prof Ian Horrocks, Prof Chris Bizer, Mark Greaves from venture capitalists Vulcan Inc, Chris Welty of IBM and Fausto Giunchiglia from the University of Trento. The keynote talks can be accessed at http://summerschool.eswc2011.org/content/keynotes

The rest of the week was taken up with tutorials followed by hands on sessions on topics such as reasoning, linked open data, vocabulary building and alignment, linked services, and application front-ends.The students also undertook project work in small groups building on what they had learnt.

Of course time was also made free for socializing, with meals, excursions and an end-of-school party ensuring students made new friends and had fun.
